I am in a sling for a few days. I was watching tv (a House rerun) late Friday night when I got a terrible cramp in my right leg. I stood up to walk it off and found I was swim-headed. I thought the bathroom was the place to be in case of sickness so I went there. Blacked out, I guess because I woke up on the floor. My leg was better! But I must have landed on my shoulder because it hurt most prodigious. After a bad night my husband took me to a very nice emergency room where I got useful medicines and advice like "Don't cross your legs" and "Don't get dehydrated."

So now I get a day off from work, two new follow-up doctor appts., and have to type one-handed. I'm okay, though. Really. It's just bad timing. Today is the first day our new library is really open and I hate to miss it. Also we are retagging our whole collection with RFID tags and now I am not going to be much help, am I? Feel like I've let down the team. But everyone has been really nice about it.

SKY IS FALLING

And especially today.

However, the sky might only be hovering. It may work out. Because he bullied and temper-tantrumed his wife and her family into giving him his way.

A recent pretty horrible credit card bill was eased just a touch by the inclusion of two coupons for McDonald's country fried chicken sandwiches--one for breakfast, the other for lunch. Having a few hours to kill this morning after an early appointment, I used a coupon, plus I indulged in potato cakes and iced coffee. The chicken biscuit was just okay--dryish. I think a little honey mustard might have made it quite good.

But here's the thing.* The fairly sparse dollar menu included this item: One hour Wi-Fi.

For a buck, you get an hour. I wonder how they do that, and why. It just seems really silly, given the number of places that offer free wi-fi now.

(*--Monk fan.)

Tagged by [info]kalanthe. (How do you get that LJ linky thing to work? ) (Later: Ha! Found it)

List seven habits/quirks/facts about yourself.
Tag seven people to do the same.
Do not tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag "whoever wants to do it" OR ELSE YOU FAIL.

1. I don't do chainmail or post anything to everyone I know. But I wish to please Kalanthe so I'm going to post the 7 quirky things I can think of quickly. I'm okay with failure in this context.

2. I air-type most of what I hear and quite a lot of what I say. Ever since I took typing in seventh grade I have done this. It is actually a relief to communicate by email or posting because I would have to move my fingers anyway.

3. I am a grammar snob. My current great peeve is the failure to use "me" in a sentence with the word "and" in it. I blame this on all the mothers of the world who correct "Bubba and me are fixing to..." with "Bubba and I...." The objective case of the first person is me. This does not change because you bring along a companion. If something happens to you alone, you would say "Something happened to me." If something happens to you and Bubba, or to Bubba and you (it doesn't matter since I am not involved and do not need to self-effacingly put Bubba first), you would say, "Something happened to Bubba and me." But you never, never should say, "Something happened to Bubba and I." Please help me champion this cause.

4. I am one of those much-maligned Fundamentalists. If by fundamentalist you mean a person who believes in God and that the Bible contains His words (penned by a variety of scribes) and His instructions to us, then I am a fundamentalist. If by fundamentalist  you mean someone who believes that people should actually buy into the teachings of Christ and the interpretation of Christianity as taught in the New Testament, then I am a fundamentalist. I prefer the term Christian, naturally. It is really a very practical lifestyle. What I struggle with mostly is how to talk to other people about what a loving and gracious God we have and why they should care.

5. I am upset by the expression "Oh, my God." In general the people who say this are not calling on any particular deity, nor calling attention to one. They are not praying. They are not expressing that the person they are talking to or about is deity. They are just saying these words as a meaningless exclamation. But to my ears it is using the Lord's name in vain, and it grieves me. See quirk #4.

6. I love chocolate mint. Andes mints and those chocolate-covered Altoids make me very happy indeed. York peppermint patties, yum.

7. I love most of the incarnations of Star Trek and and Stargate and will watch reruns pretty happily. But for several years now I have taken to falling asleep 36 minutes into the program. It drives me crazy. It even happens with the new episodes. It especially happens at 8:36.

A few days ago an awful lot of people posted entries celebrating the right to have legal abortions. I respect your opinions. Many of you are people whose intelligence and character I admire very much. I also recognize the great tragedy of rape and the anguish of decision-making that goes into most abortions. I do not belittle any of that.

But I am here to lament. MOST abortions are not about rape. Miscarriage is not abortion. I grieve over casual sex. I agonize over children having sex. I am incredulous over a culture that shrugs off personal responsibility for their own decisions to have sex without birth control. They celebrate the right to choose, and yet their choices are so irresponsible that the ultimate consequence is to take a life. And this may not be a casual decision but it is far too easy to execute.

You go ahead and flame me. I can not be silent on this.

It is snowing today in Richmond. It won't last, and it won't get us sent home from work or school, but just now it is pretty.

So I was looking out a big office window to see, for there was no snow as I was driving in, and I saw a girl standing on the sidewalk. She had red gloves and a red scarf, and she was piroutting in the snow. A twirl, a sway, a little dance. A pause. And again.

Dancing in the snow. Dancing for the snow. What a bright spot in my day!

I'm stumped. I am a reference librarian, okay, I was a reference librarian several years ago, and still I am stumped. My husband, an aspiring computer fixer or something, wants a pair of slip-joint needle-nose pliers. I can't find any. So I'm thinking there is another name for them. I've looked at Craftsman and Channellock and Snap-on Tools. I can find locking needle-nose pliers but nothing non-locking that's adjustable. So--any suggestions? Sam? Anybody?

Thanks.

**Never mind! He came home from work early. He wants 7" Lockjaw self-adjusting needle nose pliers.

I did it; might as well share it.

you are mediumseagreen
#3CB371

Your dominant hues are cyan and green. Although you definately strive to be logical you care about people and know there's a time and place for thinking emotionally. Your head rules most things but your heart rules others, and getting them to meet in the middle takes a lot of your energy some days.

Your saturation level is medium - You're not the most decisive go-getter, but you can get a job done when it's required of you. You probably don't think the world can change for you and don't want to spend too much effort trying to force it.

Your outlook on life is brighter than most people's. You like the idea of influencing things for the better and find hope in situations where others might give up. You're not exactly a bouncy sunshine but things in your world generally look up.
